Tips to Go Green and Save the World

Animals living at the South Pole

Two polar regions
There are two main Polar Regions in the world; it is identified in the globe as the Arctic and the Antarctic. The Arctic Circle and Arctic Tundra are found at the North Pole, covering 5 million square miles of the top of the North Hemisphere. On the other hand, the Antarctic is found at the South Pole. The Arctic is made up of ice floating on the ocean and the Antarctic is a rocky continent covered in ice. In both polar there is very little rainfall because it is so cold, and there is little water in the air. The main difference between the two polar points is that the Arctic (North Pole) is connected to Europe and Canada, meaning that there are more species of both animals than in the Antarctic (South Pole) which is completely isolated from the rest of the world.

The South Pole animals
The Antarctic continent is located in the South Pole which is desolate place covered in ice with desert like conditions. Even in this cold environment the following animals dominate the region: seals, sea elephants, penguins, petrels and Arctic foxes. These animal species have adapted to this cold environment. The animals in Antarctic are very much carnivorous. There are no plants growing on the frozen Antarctic surface, so animals must eat other animals in order to survive. However, the waters have numerous species of fishes, crustaceans and mollusks beneath the sea of ice. Penguins are the most common animal found in Antarctica. The larger predators such as leopard seal and killer whales inhabit the waters around the frozen islands and huge whales flock to the Antarctic in order to prey in the nutrient-rich waters.

The Antarctica
Antarctic is freezingly cold, so that breathe condenses and skin freezes in seconds. Moreover, life on the Antarctic Continent is cruel and ruthless if only to survive. The South Pole lies inland, at the center of the Antarctic continent. The region is so cold that only humans in heated dwellings can survive during winter. The recent climate change and global warming have made the biggest impact on the Polar Regions, as the increasing temperatures causes more and more ice to melt. To protect the rare animals living in the Antarctic, the Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1961 which prevents Antarctica from being commercially exploited. Differently, the Arctic had been subjected to exploitation like mining for oil and minerals and fishing and hunting in many areas.
